RetroFlexiones: Discípulos cambian el mundo

 

Hechos 17:1-9

Los cristianos del siglo I tenían bastante reputación: ¡eran las personas que "han trastornado al mundo!"(NBLH) Qué diferente de nuestra reputación actual. Si preguntas a muchos estadounidenses hoy sobre los "cristianos", te responderán con palabras como 'conservador' o 'reservado'. Las Escrituras y la historia pintan un panorama bastante diferente de los cristianos.

Aquí en Tesalónica, éramos un "han trastornado al mundo"; en la Roma de Nerón, los cristianos abrazaban la muerte solo por reclamar el nombre de Cristo; Martín Lutero clavó audazmente su 95 Tesis en la puerta de la iglesia de Wittenberg... solo buscando pelea; Tyndale tradujo la Biblia del latín al inglés—en oposición a la Iglesia... y fue quemado en la hoguera; en los siglos XIX y XX, misioneros viajaron a todas partes del mundo... y muchos fueron asesinados por las personas a las que fueron a servir; los grandes movimientos sociales de los siglos XIX y XX—contra la segregación, buscando la liberación de las mujeres y el derecho al voto para todos, y más—fueron a menudo liderados por la Iglesia o grupos cristianos. Sí, los cristianos tienen una larga historia de poner el mundo patas arriba porque los discípulos no abrazan el statu quo; cambian el mundo. Y no deberíamos sorprendernos.

Jesús—¡Vas a hacer más! — En Juan 14:12, Jesús hace una afirmación aparentemente audaz sobre los futuros discípulos y lo que harán: "Les aseguro que el que cree en mí también hará las obras que yo hago y aun las hará mayores..."(NVI). ¡Guau! "¿Obras mayores?" En los Evangelios encontramos unas 40 sanaciones. Ocho personas están curadas de la ceguera. Más de 9000 personas fueron alimentadas en dos momentos distintos. ¿Obras mayores que estas? ¿De verdad? Bueno, Jesús no miente.

• En 2025, Methodist Healthcare of South Texas llevó atención y sanación a más de 600.000 personas. Los metodistas tienen cientos de hospitales y clínicas en todo el mundo....
• El Hospital de Ojos de la Iglesia Metodista Unida Lowell y Ruth Gess en Sierra Leona, África Occidental, trata y aporta la vista a más de 20.000 personas cada año, solo uno de los muchos hospitales metodistas que llevan la vista a las personas.
• Nuestra Despensa Maná aquí en McAllen FUMC ha alimentado a unas 133.000 personas en 17 años. Y el nuestro es solo uno entre cientos en Estados Unidos, uno entre miles en todo el mundo.

Sí, obras mayores que estas... y lo estamos haciendo juntos como metodistas unidos—sabemos que nuestra generosidad apoya el ministerio aquí... y alrededor del mundo.

Un poco es mucho—El dinero que damos, las horas de voluntariado que dedicamos, las palabras que compartimos—para animar a otros, compartir nuestra fe o llamar a la justicia—todo esto trabaja junto para cambiar nuestro mundo. Jesús cuenta esa breve y poderosa parábola: "Y de nuevo [Jesús] dijo: "¿Con qué debo comparar el reino de Dios?  Es como levadura que una mujer tomó y mezcló con tres medidas de harina hasta que toda quedó levadura." (Lucas 13:20-21) ¿Has horneado pan o trabajado con levadura? Si es así, ya sabes. Un poco de levadura pasa por la harina mientras la mezclamos y amasamos... Y qué alegría cuando todo encaja en algo como un pastel casero, un rollo de canela o un panqueque.

En el reino o reinado de Dios, cada céntimo que damos, cada acto de bondad, cada palabra motivada por el amor de Dios es levadura en este mundo. El dar, servir y hablar inspirado por el amor de los discípulos de todo el mundo es levadura... Y juntos cambiamos el mundo.

Nuestra reputación—En nuestras comunidades, la Primera IMU de McAllen es conocida como una congregación "de acción". Esto se debe a que hemos decidido amar con audacia, servir con alegría y liderar con valentía. Así es como estamos llamados a vivir, y estamos haciendo todo lo posible para vivir así. Hacemos estas cosas porque Dios ha derramado su gracia en nuestras vidas y nos ha llevado a su reino. El amor y la gracia de Dios nos motivan. Sigamos haciendo esto juntos, sigamos siendo levadura en este mundo, sigamos cambiando el mundo... mientras vivimos la fe y compartimos las Buenas Nuevas del amor de Dios en Jesucristo. Amén.

AfterWords: Disciples Change the World

 

Acts 17:1-9

Christians of the 1^st Century had quite a reputation—they were the people “who have been turning the world upside-down”! How different from our reputation today. Ask many Americans today about “Christians,” and they’ll come back with words like ‘conservative’ or ‘reserved.’ The Scriptures and history paint a rather different picture of Christians.

Here in Thessalonica, we were a “people who turn the world upside-down;” in Nero’s Rome, Christians embraced death just for claiming the name of Christ; Martin Luther boldly nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of the Wittenberg church…just spoiling for a fight; Tyndale translated the Bible from Latin to English—in opposition of the Church…and was burned at the stake; in the 1800’s and 1900’s, missionaries went out to all parts of the world…and many were killed by the people they went to serve; the great social movements of the 19^th and 20^th Centuries—against segregation, seeking women’s liberation and voting rights for all, and more—were often led by the Church or Christian groups. Yes, Christians have a long history of turning the world upside-down because disciples don’t embrace the status quo; they change the world. And we shouldn’t be surprised.

Jesus—You are Going to Do More! — In John 14:12, Jesus makes a seemingly audacious claim about the future disciples and what they’ll do: “Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these….” Woah! “Greater works?” In the Gospels, we find about 40 healings. Eight people are cured of blindness. Over 9000 people were fed in two separate moments. Greater works than these? Really? Well, Jesus doesn’t lie.

• In 2025, Methodist Healthcare of South Texas brought care and healing to over 600,000 people. Methodists have hundreds of hospitals and clinics around the world….
• The Lowell and Ruth Gess United Methodist Church Eye Hospital in Sierra Leone, West Africa, treats and brings sight to over 20,000 people every year—just one of many Methodist hospitals bringing sight to people.
• Our Manna Food Pantry here at McAllen FUMC has fed an estimated 133,000 people over 17 years. And, ours is just one of hundreds in the US, one of thousands around the world.

Yes, greater works than these…and we are doing this together as United Methodists—we know that our giving supports ministry here…and around the world.

A Little is a Lot—The money we give, the volunteer hours we put in, the words we share—to encourage others, to share our faith, or to call to justice—these work together to change our world. Jesus tells that brief and powerful parable: “And again [Jesus] said, “To what should I compare the kingdom of God?  It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.” (Luke 13:20-21) Have you baked bread or worked with yeast? If so, you know. A little bit of yeast works through the flour as we mix and kneed it…and what a joy when it all comes together in something like a homemade cake, cinnamon roll, or pancake.

In the kingdom or reign of God, every penny we give, every act of goodness and kindness, every word motivated by God’s love is yeast in this world. The love-inspired giving, serving, and speaking of disciples around the world is yeast, leaven…and together we change the world.

Our Reputation—In our communities, the McAllen First UMC is known as a “doing” congregation. This is because we have determined to Love boldly, Serve joyfully, and Lead courageously. That is how we’re called to live, and we’re doing all we can to live this way. We do these things because God has poured out his grace in our lives and brought us into his kingdom. God’s love and grace motivate us. Let us keep doing this together, let’s continue to be leaven in this world, let’s keep changing the world…as we live the faith and share the Good News of God’s love in Jesus Christ. Amen.
